A Fort Myers Vietnam veteran who lost $150,000 in retirement funds to convicted real estate agent Samir Cabrera has filed a class-action federal lawsuit against a Chicago attorney that Cabrera blamed for his legal troubles. In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Myers late Tuesday, Robert Mengle, on behalf of other investors, seeks roughly $11.6 million from Chicago attorney Mitch Goldsmith that they spent in land deals with Cabrera, who was convicted of 11 wire fraud and money laundering charges on Jan. 14. Cabrera, who is free on bond pending sentencing on April 27, plans an appeal.
